«Lights and Shadows in life: reaching beyond the polarity»

Sometimes things in life do not go as we had expected. And sometimes we feel that somehow we ourselves have involuntarily participated to such unexpected turns of events or even to experience again and again some repetitive patterns in our life-stories.

When  we set out for “there”, but in the end, without really understanding how it happened, we end up “elsewhere”, it is as if  we were hosting a stranger inside us, who sometimes suddenly takes control of our behaviour. Even when there are not any dramatic external interferences, we may feel that some totally unknown aspect of our own selves act as intruder in our own homeland, who is a part of our being as well as something alien, something threatening.

The word “Shadow” is a beautiful metaphor to describe such potential but actually inaccessible to our mind aspects of self, immobilised and strongly isolated from consciousness.

The term was coined by Carl Jung. However, the conductor of these 3 webinars, Petros Theodorou, developed it much further in innovative ways, proposing his own perspectives both in his workshops as well as in his book about this topic and his writings.

The concept of the “Shadow” is the core of these webinars. In an overall existential “atmosphere, they will unfold combining theoretical parts and experiential work (within the boundaries of the online possibilities).

The “Shadow” will be presented in connection with the widely (and often carelessly used in internet) notion of the “inner child”.

It will be connected with several central ideas of the Gestalt therapy philosophy, such as the term “unfinished business”, “the paradox theory of change” and ”creative adjustment”, “the relational self”.

Moreover, the “Shadow” it will be explored on the background of holism, systems theory (from physics) and recent information about our neuro-biological construction and functioning and about the processes through which we synthesise our experiences.

The participant will have the chance to enrich significantly her/his theoretical foundation and also to get inspired to devise new possibilities in her/his work, whether is a psychologist, a psychotherapist or a student in these fields.

The 3 webinars:
1. What is the “Shadow” and who is the “inner child”.  [Saturday 15 August 2020]

The relational self. Definition of the terms in the title. Our conscious and non-conscious parts: rivals or co-operators? The neuro-biological “factory” of our experiences and our Shadowed “lands”. Shadow: origins and “unfinished business”.

2. What to do with our Shadow? [Saturday 22 August 2020]

Why we cannot “understand” or “discover” the Shadow. Self-organisation in systems theory and awareness development of the energy of our Shadow. Shadow (dark) and mind (light): reaching beyond the polarity. The “paradox theory of change” and our creative adjustments to welcome the Shadow.

3. Shadows in everyday life. [Saturday 29 August 2020]

Attempts to isolate the Shadow. The Shadow of relationships. The Shadow of families. The complementary Shadows. Examples of  Shadowed “models” in our everyday events.
